Lillie Road Recreation Ground has become the latest park in Hammersmith & Fulham to earn a coveted Green Flag Award. Its addition brings the borough’s total number of award-winning parks to an unprecedented 26, setting a new record.

The Green Flag Award, run by Keep Britain Tidy, is an internationally recognised benchmark for excellence. Each site is independently assessed on everything from maintenance and biodiversity to heritage, safety and community involvement. Lillie Road Rec passed with flying colours, earning its place among the UK’s best-managed parks.

To celebrate the achievement, Cllr Bora Kwon, H&F Cabinet Member for Environment, Arts and Culture, joined local residents and the Friends of Lillie Road Rec for a flag-raising ceremony on Saturday 10 October. She was joined by H&F Mayor Cllr Sharon Holder and Cllr Nicole Trehy, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency and Travel. Speaking at the event, Cllr Kwon praised the borough’s growing network of award-winning parks and the community effort behind them, noting that caring for these spaces “with the help of volunteers and Friends groups” is central to making H&F “the best borough to live, work and socialise.”

The park, which borders Fulham Palace Road and sits beside Fulham Cemetery, is also home to Jenny’s Corner, a garden created in memory of former councillor Jenny Vaughan, who died in March 2024. Conceived by Fulham resident Joan—who met Jenny while trading plants—the garden is being developed as a sensory herb space designed to welcome residents of all abilities.

Joan, now working with volunteers to complete the garden, said she was “delighted and surprised” that the site had won a Green Flag Award. She added that while the recreation ground has long hosted sporting activity, Jenny’s Corner offers something different: “Having access to a green space does not necessarily make you part of the local community. Jenny’s Corner means an inclusive community and a healthy environment.”

The project continues to grow, with volunteers shaping a space that reflects Jenny’s generosity and commitment to local wellbeing. Residents can follow the garden’s progress online or get involved directly by joining the volunteer team.
