A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years for the murder of 28-year-old Omarkafi Sahal, who died following a stabbing in Chelsea last year.

Joshua Monroe, of Tadema Road, was convicted of murder at Isleworth Crown Court on 7 August after a five-week trial. He was sentenced this Tuesday, 28 October. Monroe had previously pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

The fatal incident occurred at around 9pm on 30 September 2024 during a fight involving multiple individuals in the World’s End Estate. Emergency services treated Mr Sahal at the scene before transferring him to hospital, where he died of his injuries two weeks later on 17 October.

In a statement following the sentencing, Mr Sahal’s family said, “With the sentencing today, a worldly chapter for our beloved son Omarkafi Sahal has closed. We have always believed that ultimate justice belongs to Allah alone, and we place our trust in him. This has been the most difficult year of our lives, but we are grateful for the support of our community. We continue to pray for Allah's mercy, to forgive his shortcomings, and to admit him into Al-Firdaus, the highest paradise.”

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police launched an extensive investigation, reviewing hours of CCTV footage and forensic evidence. Monroe was identified as the suspect and arrested on 2 October. He was initially charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, and later charged with murder following Mr Sahal’s death.

Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell of Specialist Crime South said, “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Omarkafi Sahal, who lost his life because of a senseless act of violence. We hope this sentence can provide them some comfort that justice has been served.

“This was a fast-paced investigation, and officers worked hard going through extensive CCTV and forensic evidence to identify and arrest Monroe, which led to his conviction. Monroe denied causing Omarkafi's death, but the evidence was undeniable.”
