A Fulham resident has been jailed for eight weeks after trespassing on railway tracks near Clapham Junction, causing widespread disruption during the evening rush hour.

Anthony Andre, 42, of Fulham Road, entered the tracks at around 6.30pm on Tuesday 10 September, prompting emergency safety measures including the shutdown of the electric rail system that powers trains across the area.

Although Andre was swiftly removed and arrested, his actions led to 38 trains being partially or fully cancelled, and caused 3,427 minutes of delays for passengers—many of whom were already navigating service challenges during a week of industrial action.

Andre was remanded in custody and appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates Court on 12 September, where he pleaded guilty to trespass and obstruction. He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison.

Speaking on behalf of Network Rail, Southern Railway and South Western Railway, Paul Langley, Head of Security, Crime and Resilience, said, “Anthony Andre is lucky to be walking away with a prison sentence, as it could have ended in tragedy. His actions not only put his own life at risk, but caused huge disruption for thousands of passengers trying to get home, or to see friends and family.”

Langley stressed the lethal danger of the electric rail, which carries 750 volts and is capable of causing fatal or life-changing injuries.

PC Darren Ryan, the investigating officer, added, “Andre chose to trespass during a week of strikes, causing even further disruption and chaos for the network. I’m pleased with the result in this case.”

Ryan urged members of the public to report trespass incidents by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, to help prevent tragic accidents.

The incident comes amid renewed efforts to raise awareness of railway safety. Earlier this year, Network Rail and British Transport Police launched a new series of films under the “You vs Train” campaign, titled Stay off the Tracks. The films feature first responders recounting the devastating impacts of electrical injuries, aiming to deter dangerous behaviour around railway infrastructure.
