The play
October 20, 2025
Following a well-received run at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, Letters to Joan will make its London debut at the Voila! Theatre Festival, running 12–15 November at Barons Court Theatre.
Written and performed by Samantha Streit, the two-person play draws inspiration from hundreds of real love letters exchanged between her grandparents in 1956 Brooklyn.
The narrative imagines a meeting across time between the playwright and the man her grandmother once loved, as she attempts to understand the story left behind and the dreams that were never fulfilled.
The production moves between two settings: a Brooklyn summer filled with ambition and romance, and a present-day American diner where questions of love, loss, and creative legacy unfold.
The play stars Streit alongside Kevin Cahill and is directed by Martavius Parrish, whose previous credits include associate roles on Broadway productions such as Into the Woods and Once Upon a Mattress.
Audiences at Edinburgh Fringe responded warmly to the show, with many sharing personal reflections after performances. The play has been described as both intimate and resonant, inviting viewers to reflect on the emotional inheritance of past generations.
