Megan’s cafe on King’s Road is being transformed, gaining a new look, a new cuisine and a new name - Sonya.

Local people were taken by surprise last week as the front of the Mediterranean cafe, at 572 King’s Road underwent an overnight transformation, with the disappearance of both the name Megan’s and its familiar blue colour scheme.

The front is now covered with images of the new venture, which is described as an all day Aegean bistro.

The cafe has been on the site since 2002, when it began as a small antique shop offering coffee, cakes and pastries to customers. It then became the first ever branch of what has since grown into a thriving chain, with nearly 20 cafes opening across London and beyond.

Megan’s says that Sonya is still part of its family, and is owned and run by its first ever General Manager Iskren and its Executive Chef, Sercan.

Iskren, who grew up in Bulgaria and Sercan who is originally Turkish, say they will whisk customers to the coastlines of Greece and Turkey, with a menu inspired by fishermen, farmers and family tavernas across the Aegean from Bodrum to Naxos and Izmir to Santorini.

Diners will be able to start the day with Turkish breakfast spreads, or kahvalti, and organic coffee, with Turkish coffee available for the adventurous and spend afternoons and evenings in London’s most magical hidden garden feasting on meats, fish and kebabs cooked on a fire grill.

On Bodrum Sundays, diners are promised a family style feast with joints of lamb, beef, whole fish, lobster and orzo shared by the table, accompanied by live music.

Sonya is aiming to open soon and invites future customers to register for more news on its web site.

Following the closure of its second cafe in Parsons Green Lane in July this year, this move leaves Megan's without a presence in Fulham. However, the chain says it is close to securing a site in central Parsons Green, which is believed to be the former branch of Le Pain Quotidien, just across the street from the former cafe and offering much more space.
