Work on Fulham Broadway’s upcoming M&S Foodhall is scheduled to be completed by mid-November, according to Sigma, the contractor currently fitting out the new store.

Sigma has announced the planned schedule in a letter to local people posted on the front of the site, formerly home to Whole Foods Market. Up till now, M&S has only said that its Foodhall will open in autumn, but this would ensure its launch well ahead of the annual Christmas rush.

In a statement submitted to planners at H&F Council, M&S has also revealed details about what we can expect from the new Foodhall, which will employ around 60 local people.

It says, “The new Foodhall will deliver the soul of a fresh market, with the mind of a supermarket and will include the fill your own range, the famous 360-degree cheese barge.

“ It will stock the full M&S food range such as Plant Kitchen and Eat Well with a much fuller depth and footage with approximately 6,600 lines providing a far enhanced, more enjoyable shopping environment.”

M&S says the store will offer different ways of shopping from manned and self-serve counters to shop as you go and online ordering with in-store collection.

The statement also promises that the use of attractive lighting, light boxes and digital screens will create a modern shopping environment to entice customers into the store.

It appears the store will be equally state of the art behind the scenes, with technology including Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), to scan every product as it enters or leaves, Colin and Connie, mobile counting-pillars which count everything in store
every night and robots called Percy keeping the place clean and tidy.

Summing up its plans, the company promises: “ the best of M&S in a state-of-the-art retail experience for the customers of Fulham within a well-designed building which complements the surrounding area”.

And it adds, “ This new store will ensure that M&S has a presence in Fulham for the long-term.”
