An exhibition of the work of artists with a learning disability as well as those that are neurodivergent is taking place in the Sands End Arts & Community Centre.
Launched in October 2024, This New Ground’s (TNG) Art Studio is an inclusive space for artists and the is presenting its first public exhibition, showcasing vibrant and diverse works by eight artists, each with a unique voice and perspective.
Artists with learning disabilities and who are neurodivergent remain among the most underrepresented in the cultural sector. This exhibition aims to challenge these barriers, demanding visibility, raising expectations, and redefining what inclusive contemporary art can be.
One of the exhibitors, Kelly Ware, said, “My name is Kelly and I have Autism. I love going to the TNG art studio in the mornings and trying new techniques like photo art, screen printing, painting, and drawing. It’s fun, relaxing, and keeps me busy.”
The exhibition was launched last Tuesday (1 July) with a live performance by the This New Ground Choir.
Funded by City Bridge Trust, Hammersmith United Charities, The Daisy Trust, Clothworkers Foundation, Hammersmith & Fulham Giving, and Hammersmith & Fulham Council, This New Ground provides a supportive space where artists with a learning disability can create original work,
take on commissions and collaborate on social enterprise projects.
Lucy Greonewoud, Co-director, This New Ground said, “The studio is an opportunity to work alongside artists as they develop their practice— facilitating entry into the art world in a supportive space where artists with a learning disability can create original work, take on commissions, and collaborate on social enterprise projects. It’s a place where creativity and community come together, nurturing personal and professional growth.”
