A new exhibition is set to begin on Fulham featuring a group of artists association with the international non-profit organisation ArtCan.

Alchemical runs from 18-28 April at Gallery 475 at 475 Fulham Road and focuses on the materials and processes which create each piece, as well as the finished works themselves.

The displays hearken back to the medieval practice of alchemy, and involve seemingly magical transformations, creations, or combinations. Participating artists will give talks on their practice throughout the exhibition, giving visitors additional insight into the myriad of processes which create such a wide variety of works; for instance, how metal, glass and clay can be affected by heat and pressure, how chemicals can change light into an impression of an object, or even how kitchen waste can be transformed into artwork.

Curator Catherine Sweet says, “ArtCan has a brilliant variety of international members who work in incredible and inventive media. It’s a privilege to bring this collection together from 26 member artists, and to highlight their talents. Each of the artists included in this show are breathing stories into the materials they work with - whether that be from the places they have gathered rocks to make their pigments, or through the clay, glass, fabric or plastics that are altered from their original form to create something new.”

The private view will take place on Tuesday 18 April, 6pm - 8.30pm, and free tickets are available here.

The gallery is open Monday - Saturday, 10am- 6pm.

Participating artists are: Alison Lam, Anna Walsh, Candice Wu, Caroline Banks, Catalina Christensen, Catherine Jacobs, Despina Symeou, Diana Burch, Gillian Brett, Hedy Parry-Davies, Henryk Terpilowski, Jane Higginbottom, Jean Gillespie, Julian Emsley, Kira Phoenix K’Inan, Léa Layeux, Lisa Pettibone, Lisa Marie Price, Qin Yue, Rebecca Tucker, Roberta De Caro, Shelly Pamensky, Stathis Dimitriadis, Sue Gunn, The DnA Factory MRSS.
