As JD Wetherspoon prepares to launch its new Fulham Broadway pub on 8 July, it has reestablished a historic Walham Green sign, which has been missing for over 70 years.

The pub is being created in the former entrance hall of Fulham Broadway Station, and though the name has mostly been forgotten, Walham Green was the original name of both the tube station and the surrounding area.

Until the 19th century, Walham Green was a country village on the edge of London, built around a pond which is now the site of St John’s Church. However, this all changed with the opening of the station and the arrival of the District Line in 1880.

As this photo shows, the station was known as Walham Green for over 70 years until both it and the local area were renamed Fulham Broadway in 1952. The Grade II listed building remained the station's main entrance, housing the ticket hall and a row of local shops, until the redevelopment of Fulham Broadway shopping centre in 2003, when the entrance moved inside the new centre.

The entrance hall has since been home to a number of eateries, most recently a food court known as Fulham Market Hall, but it had been empty for three years before JD Wetherspoon took it over last summer.

Now after a year of redevelopment costing around £2.5 million, the two storey pub and restaurant will open on Tuesday July 8, in the process reclaiming the building's history with the title Walham Green.

When the Walham Green pub was given the go ahead by H&F Council, JD Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We are looking forward to opening our new pub in Fulham. We are confident that it will appeal to a wide range of people and be an asset to the area’s social scene.”
