A new proposal has been put forward to transform the disused bowls club in Hurlingham Park into an inclusive community sports venue. The site, which was closed by the council in February 2024 due to financial pressures, has remained unused and recently required additional security measures following incidents of vandalism.
The initiative is led by London Lawn Sports, a not-for-profit organisation focused on regenerating bowls clubs into accessible, community-oriented spaces. Their plan centres on promoting croquet and lawn bowls—two sports known for their low barriers to entry and inclusive nature. According to the group, both activities are suitable for all ages and allow mixed-gender participation on equal terms.
The proposal outlines a financially sustainable model based on low-cost pay-and-play sessions, with instructors available to guide newcomers and offer lessons. The existing pavilion would be refurbished into a café with outdoor seating, serving both club users and park visitors. Public toilet facilities would also be installed, addressing a longstanding gap in park amenities.

London Lawn Sports intends to run outreach sessions with local schools and community groups, with all operational costs covered by the organisation and no financial contribution required from the council. The group says its aim is to bring new life to the space and foster a welcoming environment for recreational sport.
Residents and stakeholders are invited to learn more about the proposal and share feedback via the organisation’s website: www.londonlawnsports.com.
A mailing list is also available for those wishing to receive updates on the project’s progress.
