Firefighters and safety officers from the London Fire Brigade have engaged with 80 businesses during a targeted fire safety operation, aimed at improving compliance and raising awareness of legal responsibilities.

The initiative, which took place on North End Road in Fulham last month, brought together crews from local fire stations, specialist Fire Safety officers, Fire Cadets and local authority partners for what was described as an “Active Risk Target Day”.

The day focused on helping businesses better understand their duties under recent changes to the regulations which place responsibility on those in control of premises to manage fire risks and protect occupants.

Firefighters visited a wide range of premises, including pubs, shops, restaurants and hotels, offering tailored advice and practical guidance on meeting fire safety standards. These included checks on escape routes, alarm systems, emergency lighting, fire doors and risk assessments.

Alongside inspections, crews also spoke with residents, workers and visitors throughout the day, sharing advice on how to reduce common fire risks in the home.

Where concerns were identified during visits, follow-up support was arranged, including additional inspections and, in some cases, full fire safety audits to ensure compliance.

Group Commander Sami Goldbrom said the initiative provided an important opportunity for direct engagement.

He added, “Our Active Risk Target Day on North End Road was a valuable opportunity to work directly with businesses and the local community to promote fire safety.

“By bringing together borough teams, local authority partners, Fire Cadets and crews from Fulham and Hammersmith fire stations, we were able to provide practical guidance, support businesses in understanding their responsibilities and strengthen our engagement with the community.

“Reaching 80 businesses in a single day highlights the value of partnership working in helping to keep people safe.”

Councillor Zarar Qayyum, Hammersmith & Fulham’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise and Skills, said the work formed part of a wider effort to support local businesses while improving public safety.

“Helping local entrepreneurs and business owners to enhance their fire safety measures and keep residents safe with London Fire Brigade is just one of the ways we’re doing that with our partners.

“We will continue to work with local businesses on North End Road to boost the popular high street and historic market.”

Borough Commander Lucy MacLeod added that collaborative approaches were key to effective prevention. She commented, “Keeping people safe is most effective when local agencies work together. The recent Active Risk Target Day demonstrates how a coordinated approach to prevention can help reduce risk and improve fire safety across the borough.”

The Brigade said targeted days like this allow teams to focus on specific local risks while strengthening links between operational crews, safety specialists and partner organisations.
