The closed up premises of the Whole Foods Market
April 30, 2025
Marks and Spencer has submitted plans for a new shopfront and signage at the former Whole Foods Market on Fulham Broadway as it proposes to open a new Foodhall store on the site.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) revealed in February that the retailer would be taking on the space, which has sat empty since last summer.
Marks and Spencer (M&S) would not confirm the plans at the time, though the LDRS has been told an application has been formally filed with Hammersmith and Fulham Council to repurpose the site.
It has yet to be validated by council officers, though will appear on the local authority’s planning portal once this has been done.
Whole Foods Market announced it would be closing its Fulham Broadway store last summer having operated from the premises since 2014.
An online petition was launched drawing several-hundred signatures in an attempt to prevent the closure, though to no avail.
Earlier this month, M&S acknowledged plans to open a new food hall in the vacant site alongside additional premises in Clapham, Covent Garden, Putney, New Malden and Leytonstone.
A further 11 stores are also to be renewed, including a revamp of the Pantheon on Oxford Street, with £90 million to be invested over the next few years.
Sacha Berendji, Operations Director at M&S said: “London has always been a special place for M&S, growing from penny bazaars in the early 20th century into fresh Foodhalls like the one in Brixton we reopened last year.
“We serve thousands of customers in the capital across our full line offering in larger stores on Oxford Street, which are soon to be redeveloped, to food on the move in train stations and we are always looking at what we can do next.
“Our pipeline of stores demonstrates our continued investment in London, and we will continue to bring the very best of M&S to customers from Brixton to Barnet for years to come.”
M&S has more than 100 stores in London with its first opened in Brixton in 1903.
Several Fulham Broadway sites are in the midst of works or are awaiting planning permission.
As well as the former Whole Foods Market this includes the Fulham Town Hall, which is to become a hotel and co-working space, and a new JD Wetherspoon, after approval was granted last summer to move into the former station ticket office.
