Renewed Vaccination Call in Hammersmith & Fulham

Rising measles cases across London have prompted Hammersmith & Fulham Council to urge families to check their children’s vaccination status, as public health teams work to prevent the virus taking hold in the borough.

Although there have been no recent confirmed cases in H&F, infections are increasing rapidly in neighbouring areas. UK Health Security Agency data shows 16 cases in Enfield and 10 in Haringey in the past week, with several schools affected. Public health officials warn that this pattern reflects how quickly measles can spread when immunity levels fall.

H&F’s Director of Public Health, Dr Mayada Abu Affan, said the situation in north London highlights the risks for boroughs with lower vaccination uptake.

“We are seeing increasing numbers of measles infection across London, including a recent outbreak in Enfield where cases have spread across several schools. This shows how quickly measles can take hold when vaccination rates are low. I urge all families to check their child’s MMR status and take up the vaccine if they haven’t already. It’s a simple step that can prevent a very serious illness.”

Hammersmith & Fulham has historically recorded lower-than-average MMR vaccination rates, particularly for the second dose. Previous NHS data has shown that local uptake has often fallen below the 95% coverage recommended by the World Health Organization to prevent outbreaks. This leaves pockets of the community more vulnerable when measles begins circulating elsewhere in London.

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses in the world. It spreads through coughing, sneezing and close contact, and can linger in the air for up to two hours. Even brief exposure can lead to infection in people who are unvaccinated.

The MMR vaccine remains the most effective protection, preventing both illness and the risk of complications such as pneumonia, ear infections and, in rare cases, long-term neurological damage. Two doses are required for full immunity.

Parents and carers can contact their GP to check their child’s vaccination record or book an appointment. A local catch-up clinic took place on Saturday (28 February) at the Family Hub Tudor Rose Community Centre, with further dates planned throughout March.
