Riverside Artists Group Launches River Theme Projects

Events include clay workshops in Brentford and a Whistler Walk along the Thames

A series of new art projects and community events with a river theme is being launched by the Riverside Artists Group.

The free events will take place in September along the Thames from Brentford to Tower Bridge as part of the Totally Thames 2021 festival.

Totally Thames is an annual arts and cultural month-long festival during September. Held at venues spanning the length of the river through London, events range from concerts and art installations to activities and exhibitions

Brentford community clay workshops are being held at the Museum of Water & Steam for all ages and abilities, led by Máire Gartland, with Janey Hagger on Saturday 18 September and Saturday 25 September from 10am – 12pm. Contact Máire Gartland on 07925 954183 for more details.

An installation, based on the Thames at Brentford, made from clay figures and other items that represent the local community will be on display.

The event is supported by Arts Council England, Thames River Trust, as well as the museum.

Open Studio show will be taking place on Saturdays and Sundays through September (12.30-5pm) at the Museum of Water and Steam. The exhibition will include paintings, sculpture, a piece by Saadeh George made from plastic recovered from the Thames. Artists showing work will be Máire Gartland, Shona Elrick, Janey Hagger, Saadeh George and Felicity Swan.

On Saturday 18 September, from 2-4pm there will be a chance to join a ‘Whistler Walk’ with Martin Ireland. It will proceed through Chelsea and Battersea riverside neighbourhoods in the footsteps of famous artist James McNeil Whistler. Tickets cost £5 and can be bought online.

RAG was formed in 1986 at Riverside Studios, Hammersmith. It followed an open submission exhibition to which there was such a large response that a meeting was organise which led to the formation of a group, comprising established and emerging artists, came together.

RAG’s aim is to encourage and promote the interaction and practice of a diverse group of visual artists living or working in West London. It provides a network for an exchange of ideas and information. Members initiate and develop projects and exhibit in both self-selected and curated
