Girls from Godolphin and Latymer School in Hammersmith have impressed with their cooking after catering for a recent bingo night attended by local senior citizens.

They were providing the food at an event at the Earl’s Court Development Company (ECDC) Community Hub on Thursday evening which had been organised in collaboration with the Dementia Action Alliance to coincide with Dementia Action Week.

A freshly cooked three-course meal was served up before it was ‘eyes down’.

The group was also joined by Hammersmith & Fulham Councillor Asif Siddique, Lead Member for Support for Older People. Councillor Siddique thanked the pupils saying, ‘projects like this are critical for the mental wellbeing of the older residents of the borough and we are delighted that the students of Godolphin and Latymer have got involved in this way’.

Earlier in the day the Godolphin students had been honing their culinary skills under the watchful eye of the school’s catering team, Chartwells, to prepare a special menu of hummus and flatbreads; vegetable bake and greens; and apple and berry crumble with custard. This was all part of the school’s social entrepreneurship programme that they have been running with mentors from the London School of Economics. The idea is that the project will teach students how to cook more healthy food while providing free hot meals to the local community.

Lower Sixth student Bea explained, ‘We’ve really enjoyed meeting the community here in Earls Court and it has been an invaluable opportunity to learn and grow our project; our ultimate goal is to reach out to the local homeless community in the borough as they will be individuals who could benefit most’.

The ECDC Community Hub opened in June 2022 and is a flexible space run by local people, for local residents to come together. Community Hub Manager, Wasim Abd El Aziz, commented, ‘Thursday evening Community Bingo Night is one of the highlights of the week when members of the community can get together, including some of our older residents who might be feeling lonely or isolated. It was great to have the Godolphin students here to spread some good cheer and also to share their delicious food.’
