Barons Court Project has successfully reached its £358,697 crowdfunding target to expand its Talgarth Road day centre, paving the way for a major redevelopment aimed at improving support for homeless people and those living with mental health conditions in the borough.

The charity announced that the “Raising the Roof – Reach for the Stars” appeal had achieved its goal thanks to backing from the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham alongside donations from companies, community groups and individual supporters.

Funds raised through the campaign will be used to add a new floor to the centre by converting unused loft space into a dedicated art studio for the charity’s HomeLess Made artists. The new room will also host men’s and women’s wellbeing groups, while freeing up additional space elsewhere in the building for guests to relax and allowing the centre to expand its laundry provision.

Construction work is scheduled to begin on 1 July 2026.

In a statement announcing the success of the appeal, the charity thanked supporters for sharing its vision of creating “an even more welcoming centre for our guests.”

The redevelopment marks a significant milestone in the organisation’s 40th anniversary year. Earlier this spring, the charity launched the public appeal to address increasing pressure on its Victorian headquarters, where demand for services has risen sharply in recent years.

The project received a major boost through support from the council, which pledged match funding for public donations through the Spacehive crowdfunding platform. By March, the campaign had already secured almost £200,000 towards its target.

Momentum continued to build following a fundraising gala at Girdlers' Hall in the City of London, attended by council leaders, local dignitaries, business representatives and long-standing supporters of the charity.

At the event, chief executive Michael Angus spoke about the strain on the centre during winter months, recalling occasions when guests arriving from the streets found every seat occupied.

“It was never the welcome we wanted to offer,” he said, describing the urgent need for more space and improved facilities.

The evening also featured a video message from Levi Colwill, performances by Celine Love, and auction donations from the Chelsea FC Foundation and Fulham FC Foundation.

Artist Guan Chow, who experienced homelessness in 2015, also shared how joining the charity’s art club helped him discover a talent for painting and rebuild his confidence.

Barons Court Project provides more than 50 forms of support to vulnerable residents, including meals, showers, laundry, clothing, advice services and creative activities. The expansion is expected to increase capacity and improve the experience for the thousands of people who rely on the centre each year.

One supporter attending the fundraising gala summed up the purpose of the appeal by remarking: “This is not simply about a building. It is about dignity.”
