Westbound Lane of Fulham Road to Close from May till September

Closure east of Gunter Grove needed for National Grid's gas mains project

This closure, in the western edge of Chelsea will extend past Chelsea and Westminster Hospital to Beaufort Street and will inevitably affect traffic further west on Fulham Road.

In a letter sent to local residents, National Grid says: "We are preparing to replace and upgrade the old metal gas main from 15 Gunter Grove, along Fulham Road, past the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, to the junction with Beaufort Street with new pipes made of more durable material.

"The work is scheduled to take place from May to September 2017 and forms part of a five-year project that extends into the City of Westminster and London Borough of Wandsworth.

"Due to the scale of the project and for everyone’s safety there is need to close the westbound lane of Fulham Road between Beaufort Street and Gunter Grove during certain periods of the work. Where possible temporary traffic signals will be used to minimise the time and extent of the road closure.

"It is likely there will be significant disruption in the area so it will be important to allow more time for journeys."

This includes journeys to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, as buses serving the hospital are likely to be diverted.

There will be a public information session to find out more about this work and speak to the project team in the Small Hall, Chelsea Old Town Hall, Kings Road SW3 on Thursday 16 February 2017 between 2pm and 8pm.

National Grid says the gas mains replacement programme is crucial to providing safe and reliable energy to homes and businesses and will reduce the amount of unplanned work to repair ageing gas pipes. It will also support London’s economic growth.

It adds: "Throughout the work, all shops and businesses will be open as usual and we will make every effort to minimise any inconvenience to people who work, live or travel through the area.

"We have planned this work with extensive discussions over many months with stakeholders including the emergency services, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Transport for London (TfL) traffic management and buses."

This latest phase of National Grid's gas mains replacement follows last year's works on King’s Road between Stanley Bridge and Gunter Grove, which led to the road being closed to westbound traffic for most of 2016.

National Grid is also currently carrying out works further west on New King's Road, around Parsons Green.
