Dear Resident,

I hope that you are well.

Last week on Tuesday 10 May the country witnessed a moment in history – the Prince of Wales reading out the Queen’s Speech at the State Opening of Parliament. The Monarch would usually read out the Speech, but unfortunately, due to ill health, the Queen was unable to attend. The Prince of Wales delivered the speech in an excellent manner on her Majesty’s behalf.

The State Opening of Parliament marks the formal start of the parliamentary year and takes place on the first day of a new parliamentary session. The Queen’s Speech sets out the Government’s agenda for the upcoming session and it outlines the proposed legislation and polices that the Government seeks to introduce. It is also the only routine occasion when the three constituent parts of Parliament – the Crown, the House of Lords and the House of Commons - gather together in the same place.

On this occasion, Parliament was opened by the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge as Counsellors of State.

Last Tuesday, the Queen’s Speech set out 38 new Bills which assist this Conservative Government in delivering on the British people’s priorities as your priorities are our priorities, including:

• Growing and strengthening the economy to tackle the cost of living, as highlighted in the opening lines of the Queen’s speech.
• Supporting and backing the police to make the streets safer.
• Building and delivering an affordable and secure energy supply.

Some of the new legislation includes the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill which will level up and regenerate our towns and cities and shift power to local leaders; the Schools Bill which will strengthen our school’s system, raise standards for students, reform funding and encourage attendance; and the Transport Bill which will put Great British Railways on a statutory footing, making our transport system more reliable and efficient for passengers.

One piece of legislation which will be of significant importance, is the Energy Security Bill. In addition to being the Member of Parliament for Chelsea & Fulham, I am also the Minister for Energy, Clean Growth and Climate Change and I look forward to taking this Bill through the House of Commons later this summer.

This Bill will deliver a cleaner, more secure and affordable homegrown energy system that will encourage the creation of tens of thousands of jobs, whilst importantly, cutting household bills for families and achieving energy sovereignty. This Bill will build on the success of the COP26 Summit in Glasgow last year and deliver on our commitments in the Energy Security Strategy.

getting on with the job

All Bills detailed in the Queen’s Speech allow the Government to build on the work we have done so far, deliver on our promises, focus on the British peoples’ priorities, make the most of our Brexit freedoms and help the country recover from the pandemic.

I look forward to continue getting on with the job!

Kind regards,
Greg Hands

The Rt Hon Greg Hands MP
Member of Parliament for Chelsea and Fulham
