Fulham Pier will unveil a major new public artwork by social-media breakout artist Sophie Tea next month, marking the painter’s first ever public commission and the launch of the riverside destination’s summer cultural season.

The large-scale installation, titled Under the Pier, opens on 1 June and runs until October, free to visit daily. It transforms the pier’s riverwalk and surrounding walls into a vivid reimagining of the British seaside, complete with painted beams and sculptural 3D elements inspired by seagulls, sailing boats and deckchairs. The work continues Fulham Pier’s rotating public-art programme, following last year’s commission by designer Yinka Ilori, and signals the start of a packed summer of events ranging from live music and roller discos to wellness workshops and family festivals.

Tea, who has built a following of more than two million online, said the project fulfils a long-held ambition to make art accessible beyond gallery walls. “Creating a public installation has been on my goal list on the fridge for over a decade,” she said. “As a completely independent artist without traditional gallery backing, I’ve always known that reaching that goal would take a different path, so bringing this work to life at Fulham Pier feels incredibly special.”

The commission, produced in collaboration with New Public, reflects Fulham Pier’s aim to make contemporary art part of everyday life along the Thames. Director Glen Sutton described the installation as a perfect fit for the riverside setting: “There’s something special about summer at Fulham Pier—the long sunny days, the river, the way people spend time here. Sophie’s installation adds a playful cultural layer for people to enjoy.”

Visitors will be able to see Tea live-painting on selected dates throughout the season. Alongside the artwork, Fulham Pier’s summer programme features markets, DJ takeovers, open-mic nights, family raves and interactive digital art indoors. Food and drink come courtesy of Brasserie Constance, curated by Michelin-starred chef Adam Byatt, and Flo Bar, while the Riverside Market offers a refreshed line-up of international street-food traders.
