Buses will stop instead on Putney Bridge Approach
Free swimming for under 16s throughout August is to be introduced at two borough pools. This joint initiative, funded by NHS Hammersmith & Fulham and supported by the council, means that budding Adrian Moorhouses and Rebecca Adlingtons will be able to make a splash for less cash this summer.
This exciting offer is available at both the Phoenix Fitness Centre on Bloemfontein Road and Fulham Pools on Lillie Road.
Free swimming application forms are available from schools, libraries, children’s centres and leisure centres. All you need to do is fill it in and return it to one of the leisure centres, together with a £1 registration fee.
The news comes only four months after the council announced that it would be offering adults over the age of 60 free swimming.
Cllr Paul Bristow, cabinet member for residents' services, said: ”This is excellent news for young people in the borough. NHS Hammersmith & Fulham and the council are committed to improving the health and well-being of all residents, especially young people, so make sure that you make the splash. Swimming is the most popular way to keep fit in the country so I am sure that this offer will prove to be very well received.”
Dr Dagmar Zeuner, NHS Hammersmith and Fulham director of public health, said: "One of the best ways to combat childhood obesity is by getting youngsters interested in being active from an early age and we're all committed to achieving this. Swimming is great for your muscles, heart and lungs and is a fun way to let of steam - perfect for getting rid of excess energy.
"We know that saving money is a priority for everyone at the moment and combined with the summer holiday search to keep youngsters entertained, there is no better time to take advantage of this offer."
Children under the age of 16, together with a parent or guardian, can swim for free at either leisure centre from 10am to 12noon seven days a week. Those aged nine to 16 can swim for free unaccompanied at either leisure centre from 2pm to 4pm.
Our leisure centres are easy to access by public transport. The closest tube stations for Phoenix Fitness Centre (operated by GLL) are White City and Shepherd's Bush Market while the centre is also served by buses 283 and 288.
The local tube station for Fulham Pools (operated by Virgin Leisure) is Barons Court and is served by buses 74, 190, 430.
There is more going on for youngsters in Hammersmith & Fulham than people realise. That is why the council has recently launched its YouThink campaign. Visit www.lbhf.gov.uk/youthink to find a whole host of activities for young people.
