Stalls set up to encourage us all to go green

Recycle Week kicks off on Monday, June 22, and Hammersmith and Fulham Council is using it to encourage us all to do our bit for the environment.

The council is hosting stalls around the borough where they will offer tips on making recycling easier and handing out

free reusable cotton bags.

In Fulham, the stall will be within Broadway Shopping Centre on Friday, June 26 from 10am till 4pm, and others will be at West 12 Shopping Centre in Shepherds Bush on June 24  and Kings Mall in Hammersmith on June 25, also from 10am till 4pm.

The council points out that going green help keeps its landfill

charges down, which in turn helps drive down the council tax.

Cllr Greg Smith, cabinet member for crime and street scene, say: " Very few people realise just how expensive it is for the council to send our waste to landfill. In fact, landfill rates have almost doubled in the last two years. The best ways for H&F to avoid paying these onerous taxes is for residents to recycle as much as possible. "

Last year, H&F residents recycled 27 per cent of household waste. The council picked up 15,700 tonnes of recyclable material - paper and cardboard, glass, cans and tins, plastic bottles and drinks and food cartons - through its orange sack doorstep collections.

You can put the following in the borough's Smart recycling banks or orange sacks:

Paper and card - Newspapers, magazines, catalogues, directories, leaflets, loose paper, card and cardboard, which should be flattened.

Glass - Glass bottles and jars - without lids
Cans, tins and aerosols
Plastic bottles - without lids and squashed if possible
Paper-based drinks and liquid food cartons such as Tetra Paks
