Venezuelan breakfast pancakes proved winning recipe for Devonshire Road cafe team
Urban Pantry, the cafe on Devonshire Road, has come first in the National Breakfast Of The Year Awards 2019, beating off stiff competition from hundreds of other entries.
Their "Cachapas", traditional Venezuelan sweetcorn and cheddar pancakes with tomato salsa and chorizo were the firm favourites of the judges.

There were hundreds of entries and 16 finalists, all whom had to cook 3 dishes for a panel of judges. There was stiff competition from hotels, cafes and restaurants from all over the UK.
Cafe owner Kate Frobisher said : We were really nervous on the day because we saw other people's entries and they looked really fab but much more traditional breakfast style food , so we didn't know if ours would do well, but all the judges really loved our dish.
"During their speech at the awards, they said that as soon as they tasted the dish they knew it was the winning dish, even though they still had 8 other dishes to try, so that felt amazing!"

Urban Pantry returned home victorious with the trophy
for Breakfast of the Year and a £1000 cash prize!

It was a visit to Australia and New Zealand that inspired Kate Frobisher to set up Urban Pantry, in the former Classic Image Gallery premises. Kate, who is from Twickenham, trained at Leith's School of Food and Wine, and then set off to live in Sydney, Australia, where she fell in love with the breakfast culture. After finishing her degree at Birmingham University, she returned to work in the hospitality sector in New Zealand, and was inspired by the fresh food and the coffee culture there.
