Langford Primary in Sands End has welcomed children and staff back after the festive break and begun its first term as an academy.

The Gilstead Road school has joined United Learning – a group of academies and independent schools located across the
country - and says this means pupils will be able to enjoy exciting activities designed to enhance their overall school experience, while staff will benefit from the Group’s wide range of high-quality professional development opportunities.

Seamus Gibbons, the school's Head Teacher, says: "‘We are thrilled to begin 2016 as part of United Learning. It is always exciting to return to the school after the Christmas holidays but this year there is an added buzz about the school.

" Over the past year, we have been working very closely with United Learning who have provided invaluable support as we seek to drive up standards across the school. Our pupils and staff now have access to fantastic opportunities and we can’t wait to meet all the other schools in the Group."

Langford Primary, a large Victorian school originally constructed in 1889, joins Peterborough Road secondary school Hurlingham Academy -formerly Hurlingham amd Chelsea School - which joined United Learning and became an academy one year ago in January 2015.

Since then, the school has achieved an eight point rise in the percentage of students achieving five or more A* to C grades at GCSE including English and maths, results which were celebrated at a special Foundation Day held this autumn.

Jon Coles, Chief Executive of United Learning, says: " I am delighted to welcome Langford Primary into United Learning. Under the leadership of Seamus Gibbons, the school is making significant progress and we look forward to continuing to support staff as they seek to provide each and every pupil with the high-quality education they deserve."
