Hammersmith and Fulham is one of 13 councils across

London which will soon have a simple scheme allowing drivers to pay for car parking by mobile phone.

London Councils, the umbrella body for the capital's

boroughs, plans to create one London wide payment system to replace the current arrangement, which requires motorists

in different areas to register with a number of separate schemes.

Under the plans now being drawn up they would only have

to register their vehicle and payment details once. Drivers would pay parking fees by calling or texting a local rate number and quoting a unique reference code given to each parking space or bay.

Chairman of London Councils' Transport and Environment Committee, Cllr Mike Fisher, says: "We want to make it quicker and easier for drivers to pay for their parking in London. Rather than searching for the right change to put in the machine, motorists can simply call in or text their location and pay by credit or debit card."
